What is FASD?
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)
FASD often occurs when parents simply aren’t aware of the impact of consuming alcohol while pregnant or are not supported by their community to remain alcohol free during pregnancy.
FASD can affect your child’s physical or neuro/behavioural development and has a lifelong impact. The severity of the disorder and predictability of its occurrence depends on a huge range of factors, making it almost impossible to predict the likelihood of occurrence or severity.
Did you know that there is no known safe amount of alcohol that can be consumed during pregnancy and breastfeeding? Because we just don’t know, the safest thing to do for your baby is to not drink alcohol at all if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. And, it is the responsibility of the community as a whole to help support expecting parents to remain alcohol-free during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
If you’d like more information about alcohol and pregnancy, please feel free to raise it during your next antenatal appointment. If you need help reducing your alcohol intake, we also have excellent psychology services onsite.
